The actors’ sizzling chemistry on the set of We Live in Time led to an extended take they didn’t realize was still rolling.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s on-screen connection in We Live in Time was so magnetic that during a particularly steamy love scene, neither actor realized the cameras were still rolling well past the intended “cut.”
At a promotional event at the 92nd Street Y on Friday, Garfield shared the amusing behind-the-scenes story of the moment with the audience, explaining how both he and Pugh got so lost in their characters that they failed to hear the director, John Crowley, call “cut” during their very first take.
Describing the scene as “very intimate” and “passionate,” Garfield recounted how it was filmed on a closed set with only the essential crew present: just the camera operator and the boom operator. The actors were following the choreography, completely immersed in the moment, and went beyond what was planned due to missing the cue from Crowley, who was in another room.
As the scene continued, Garfield said he and Pugh telepathically started wondering, “This definitely feels like a longer take.” It wasn’t until they glanced at the crew and saw both men politely facing the wall that they realized they’d gone a little further than expected. Garfield chuckled, noting how both he and Pugh felt secure enough in the environment to let the scene continue naturally, remarking, “We’ll just carry on.”
Garfield’s humorous recollection comes ahead of the October 11 U.S. premiere of We Live in Time, a romantic drama where the two stars share the screen in a story about a surprising encounter that changes their lives. Their undeniable on-screen chemistry seems poised to captivate audiences as much as it did the crew during filming.
Despite the slightly extended take, Garfield emphasized how safe and comfortable both actors felt on set, allowing them to fully engage in the scene without hesitation. It’s clear that this level of trust between the actors has translated into powerful, palpable chemistry that’s sure to shine in the final cut of the film.
