Oscar-winning actor shares emotional and inspiring journey in a one-man show after a year-long recovery
Jamie Foxx made a triumphant return to the stage in Atlanta, performing a series of one-man shows that marked his first live performances in 18 years. The 56-year-old Oscar-winning actor and comedian expressed his overwhelming sense of “pure joy” following a year-long recovery from a mysterious health scare in 2023. In an emotional Instagram post, Foxx shared photos from his performance, including one where he appeared to wipe away tears, and reflected on his deeply personal journey.
“I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story, and there was no better place than Atlanta, Georgia,” Foxx wrote. “I haven’t been on stage in 18 years, but I needed the stage, and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love — and that’s what you were.”
Foxx, who was hospitalized in April 2023 due to an undisclosed medical emergency, has kept much of the ordeal private. However, in a July social media video, he revealed that the crisis began with a “bad headache” and resulted in him being unconscious for 20 days. He described how his sister and daughter rushed him to medical care after his initial symptoms, and he credited the team at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta for his recovery.
“I don’t remember anything,” Foxx recounted. “But I’m here, and now I’m sharing my journey.”
In March, Foxx hinted at his plans to address the incident publicly, stating at an African American Film Critics Association awards luncheon that he would reveal what happened “in a funny way.” True to his word, Foxx’s one-man show blended humor with heart as he detailed his health scare. However, he was quick to clarify that his performance was more than stand-up comedy. He called it an “artistic explanation” of something that went “terribly wrong.”
During the performance, Foxx reflected on the emotional weight of the experience. In a video shared by Gayle King, who attended one of the shows, Foxx admitted backstage that opening up about his “wounds” was excruciating. He also expressed initial anxiety about whether the audience would understand or laugh at his story.
Despite his worries, the show was a success, with King revealing in her Instagram post that it was being taped for a Netflix special. The performance allowed Foxx to reconnect with his audience and express gratitude for his renewed health and the opportunity to return to what he loves most.
Foxx concluded his Instagram post by thanking Atlanta and Piedmont Hospital for helping him get back on stage, where he continues to inspire with his humor, resilience, and unwavering spirit.
