Director Matt Reeves Focuses on Perfecting the Script, Pushing the Much-Anticipated Sequel’s Release Date Back by Another Year
The much-anticipated sequel to The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, has faced another setback, with its release date now officially moved from October 2, 2026, to October 1, 2027. The delay, confirmed by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, is attributed to the ongoing development of the script, with Gunn emphasizing that Reeves is committed to delivering the best possible film.
Gunn shared on social media that the delay stems from Reeves’ meticulous approach to writing the script, stressing that the timeline for a completed script is unpredictable. “Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting, and post-production on big films,” Gunn explained.
This marks the third delay for the sequel, which has been eagerly awaited since its predecessor in 2022. The sequel is expected to explore the aftermath of Gotham’s catastrophic flood, with Paul Dano’s Riddler locked away in Arkham Prison. As Reeves teased, the film will dive into the unrest and division that permeate the city, reflecting a world rife with turmoil and polarization.
Fans eager to see Pattinson on screen will have to wait until 2027 for The Batman 2. However, Pattinson’s other highly anticipated project, Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, will hit theaters on March 7, 2025, offering some relief in the meantime.
